Manchester United and England great Sir Bobby Charlton has died aged 86, his family have announced in a statement lottery
Charlton was a key member of England’s victorious 1966 World Cup team and also enjoyed great success at club level with United, who became the first English club to win the European Cup in 1968 lottery
A statement on behalf of the Charlton family said: “It is with great sadness that we share the news that Sir Bobby passed peacefully in the early hours of Saturday morning lottery

”Charlton’s European Cup success at United came 10 years after the Munich air disaster, which he and team manager Sir Matt Busby survived but which claimed the lives of eight of Charlton’s team-mates lottery
Born in Ashington on October 11 1937, Charlton played in the World Cup final alongside his brother Jack, who died aged 85 in 2020, and won 106 caps for England, scoring 49 goals lottery
He made his debut for United in 1956 and went on to play 758 matches for the Red Devils, scoring 249 goals lottery
Both were long-standing club records until they were overtaken by Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney respectively lottery
Charlton won three league three titles and one FA Cup at Old Trafford and, after leaving United in 1973 and becoming Preston manager, he returned to Old Trafford 11 years later as a club director lottery

”Charlton made his England debut against Scotland at Hampden Park in April 1958, just over two months after he had survived the Munich air disaster lottery

Charlton scored three times at the 1966 World Cup, including both goals in the 2-1 semi-final victory over Portugal, and ended his England career at the age of 32 following the quarter-final exit to West Germany in 1970 lottery

A club statement read: “Rotherham United’s Sky lottery Bet Championship fixture against Ipswich Town has been postponed on the grounds of supporter safety following discussions with representatives from the Safety Advisory Group and the EFL which took place shortly after 4:30pm on Friday lottery
“After the River Don – which courses around the perimeter of AESSEAL New York Stadium – burst its banks, urgent discussions lottery between representatives from the Safety Advisory Group/Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council and club safety personnel and the EFL – were held with the conclusion deeming the weather conditions and their subsequent effect on the surrounding area a danger to supporters lottery
“This coupled with continued rainfall resulting in the flood waters rising and Don Street being closed to the public left the authorities with no choice but to postpone the game lottery
“Throughout the day the pitch at AESSEAL New York Stadium has remained playable but with the safety of everyone attending the match at the height of our priorities, the difficult decision to postpone the fixture has been taken lottery
“The decision was relayed to the EFL and our counterparts at Ipswich Town with all parties in agreement that postponing the fixture was the only possible way to ensure the safety of players, staff and supporters lottery
“It goes without saying that we are obviously disappointed for supporters due to attend and those set to watch at home given the game was being broadcast live on Sky lottery Sports lottery
”Two cinch Premiership matches are among six Scottish league games which have been postponed amid severe weather warnings lottery
Aberdeen’s home match against Dundee and Motherwell’s trip to face St Johnstone have fallen foul of the storm lottery
The news came after a second person died in Angus as a result of the storm, which has brought floods and high winds, and after warnings of a risk to life were extended to all day Saturday as more heavy rain is forecast lottery

SPFL chief operating officer Calum Beattie said: “We have been in close contact with Police Scotland and our clubs and it’s clear that we continue to face very severe weather, particularly in the north east, in the coming days lottery
“We never postpone any matches lightly, but our discussions with the emergency services left us in no doubt that this was the correct decision lottery
”The SPFL added that it would continue to monitor the situation involving the remaining fixtures across the country lottery
St Johnstone had told supporters their game was going ahead as it stood less than three hours before the wider decision was taken lottery
A club statement early on Friday afternoon said: “Whilst heavy rain has affected the local area, our dedicated ground staff and officials have been working tirelessly to ensure the pitch is in optimal condition, and we’ve taken all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of both players and spectators lottery
”Altrincham’s home game against Dorking in the Vanarama National League on Saturday has also been postponed lottery
Friday’s jumps fixtures at Fakenham and Uttoxeter were called off as Storm Balottery bet continues to bring heavy rain and strong winds across the country lottery
