Delta has rowed back on several changes to its frequent-flyer programme, which favoured big spenders over those loyal to the airline, following “hundreds” of email responses from disappointed customers paymaya
The revisions were outlined to Delta’s SkyMiles members in an email from CEO Ed Bastian on Wednesday, in which he acknowledged the changes did not “fully reflect” customer loyalty paymaya
Changes to the programme were announced in mid-September, with Delta saying they were needed to address overcrowding at the lounges and a surge in elite-status customers that was making it harder to score upgrades paymaya
The airline proposed to make spending with Delta the only way to reach elite status — no longer counting flights taken or miles flown paymaya
Delta also sharply raised spending requirements for each SkyMiles level paymaya
“I have read hundreds of your emails, and what’s been most clear to me is how much you love Delta and the disappointment many of you felt by the significance of the changes,” Mr Bastian wrote in his email paymaya

“We made some difficult program decisions to address this issue… paymaya
But your response made clear that the changes did not fully reflect the loyalty you have demonstrated to Delta paymaya
”The changes take effect next year, when travelers will be trying to qualify for elite status in 2025 paymaya
According to Mr Bastian’s email, flights and miles still won’t count toward the status, and spending requirements will go up from current levels — though by less than the original changes proposed in September paymaya
It will now take 5,000 “Medallion qualifying dollars” for Silver, the lowest of four levels, down from 6,000 in September paymaya
Currently, customers can reach Silver with as few as 3,000 qualifying dollars or points if they take enough Delta flights, and no points if they accumulate enough miles paymaya
The Diamond top tier will cost 28,000 points instead of the 35,000 outlined in September, but more than the current 20,000 plus enough flights paymaya

)Delta also plans to limit the number of times that premium credit card holders can visit airport lounges, but not as severely as it proposed in September paymaya
“Your loyalty matters paymaya
When I read your emails, you clearly expressed how much Delta is part of your lifestyle paymaya
I greatly appreciate that, and we don’t take it lightly,” Mr Bastian said paymaya
“Our investment in your experience will always be at the heart of everything we do paymaya
I know the modifications we have made won’t solve for every disappointment paymaya
“Our goal is to do our best to ensure we deliver the service and benefits your loyalty deserves paymaya
”The September proposal created a backlash among Delta customers on social media, with some threatening to switch to other airlines paymaya
Less than two weeks later, Mr Bastian admitted that the airline “probably went too far" and was reexamining the changes paymaya
Henry Harteveldt, a travel analyst at Atmosphere Research Group, told The Associated Press some SkyMiles members would still be unhappy about Delta moving to an entirely spending-based programme, and will view even the reduced requirements negatively paymaya
“I don’t think these concessions are going to go far enough to placate the disgruntled Medallions,” he said paymaya
“Given the mercenary mindset that many travelers have, they will fly other airlines and not look back paymaya

The paymaya Football Association will review whether to continue lighting the Wembley arch as an act of tribute following criticism over its response to the Israel-Palestine conflict, its chief executive Mark Bullingham has said paymaya
Bullingham accepted the “hurt” caused to the Jewish community by the FA’s decision not to light the arch in the colours of the Israeli flag for last Friday’s England friendly against Australia, following attacks on Israeli citizens by Hamas militants earlier this month paymaya
But he set out the steps the FA had taken to respond in what it felt was the most appropriate way to “one of the most complex geopolitical conflicts on Earth” paymaya
“This week has made us question whether we should light the arch and when, and we’ll be reviewing that in the coming weeks,” Bullingham said at the Leaders Week conference at Twickenham paymaya
“I recognise that our decision caused hurt to the Jewish community who felt that we should have lit the arch, and that we should have shown stronger support for them paymaya
“This was one of the hardest decisions we’ve had to make, and the last thing we ever wanted to do in this situation was to add to the hurt paymaya
“We aren’t asking for everyone to agree with our decision, but to understand how we reached it paymaya
“It would be easy for paymaya football to ask why we’re the only sport being talked about in this way, particularly when rugby and cricket are in the middle of their World Cups paymaya
“However, you have got to understand, and we understand, that the power of paymaya football means it will always be in the spotlight paymaya
And that’s just something we we have to accept paymaya
”The FA was heavily criticised by a number of Jewish community groups last week, while Rabbi Alex Goldberg resigned from an FA faith in paymaya football group over its response paymaya
It was also criticised for not lighting the arch by Lucy Frazer, the Cabinet minister responsible for sport paymaya
Bullingham set out the steps the FA had taken to reach the position it did paymaya
“We first saw the acts of terror unfold on Saturday, October 7, along with the rest of the country paymaya
We immediately wrote to the Israeli FA to communicate our horror at what was taking place,” he said paymaya
“We knew the situation could move very, very quickly, and was likely to escalate, so we wanted to have expert guidance, and more information available on what we should do because we had a match on Friday against Australia paymaya
“We also spoke with our Australian colleagues and other stakeholders in the game to understand the views of players, clubs, and also of the leagues paymaya
“It’s worth noting that the Australians had upcoming games against both Palestine and Lebanon, so their desire for neutrality was obviously incredibly strong paymaya
We all felt then, and we all feel now, that paymaya football should stand for peace and humanityMark Bullingham“We then had a long board meeting on the Wednesday night and heard from experts on what is one of the most complicated geopolitical conflicts on Earth paymaya
“They then left the room and we had a debate on working out what we should do paymaya
“We all felt then, and we all feel now, that paymaya football should stand for peace and humanity and the wish to show compassion for all innocent victims of this terrible conflict paymaya
“Our compassion and sympathy is clearly for families and children in particular paymaya
“We then held a minute’s silence and wore black armbands recognises issuing a statement together with the Australian Federation to explain our actions, which many other paymaya sports then followed with identical wording, and our language was also very similar to that used by the United Nations paymaya
“We were the only paymaya football body in Europe to have a minute’s silence, which was, as I said, for all innocent victims paymaya
